Whole Class Ensemble Teaching (WCET)

Whole Class Ensemble Teaching

Every child should have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument.

To support children with learning an instrument, primary schools should offer, in line with the National Plan for Music Education, group instrumental programmes in class time such as Whole Class Ensemble Teaching (WCET).

WCET HEADSTART

Includes preparation phase before whole class instrumental learning begins.

During this time, LMS tutors work with school staff to understand pupil needs and identify any learners who may benefit from targeted pre-teach support, helping to ensure that all pupils are confident and ready to participate fully in WCET lessons. Each WCET project will be provided with instruments (including adapted instruments where necessary) alongside our Performer Pathway Framework, teaching resources and pupil certification via our Gated Portal.

Each WCET programme is carefully adapted to ensure that prior musical knowledge, skills and experience are taken into account so that all pupils can make progress from their differing starting points. Ideally, WCET should form part of a longer-term musical journey and can be delivered across the academic year to maximise progression and participation.

HeadStart is our inclusive approach to Whole Class Ensemble Teaching, incorporating pre-teach intervention to help ensure all children and young people gain meaningful musical experiences and achieve success in WCET.

We can provide specialist tutors to deliver WCET at three distinct Performer Levels:

  • Performer Level 1 – First Acess
  • Performer Level 2 – Continuation
  • Performer Level 3 – Continuation +
